Love Isn’t Just for Valentine’s Day. It’s Why I Photograph Teenagers.
As a Houston family and teen photographer, I spend a lot of time thinking about the stages we choose to document, and the ones we quietly let pass.
February 14th tends to make us think about love in big, obvious ways.
But the kind of love that truly shapes us? It happens quietly. Daily.
This is a photo of my two boys from about a year ago. Teenagers now. Taller than me. Independent. Sometimes moody. Sometimes pretending they don’t need hugs anymore. And yet, loving them has taught me more about unconditional love than anything else in my life. Not just on the easy days. On the complicated ones too.
This photo may not be “perfect” by traditional standards, but to me, it is perfect because it makes me feel something.
Not just the love and pride I have for them, but the exact joy I felt that day while photographing them. The laughter, the energy, the stage they were in at that very moment.
And that’s what truly matters.
The Stage Most Families Forget to Photograph
When your kids are little, you document everything.
First steps.
First birthdays.
First day of school.
But somewhere along the way, when they grow into teens, the photos slow down. And yet this stage may be one of the most meaningful of all.
This is when:
- Their personality becomes clearer
- Their confidence begins to take shape
- Their voice strengthens
- Their independence grows
They are no longer little but they are not fully grown. And that in-between? It deserves to be remembered.
Why I Approach Teen Portraits Differently as a Houston Teen Photographer
As a Houston teen photographer, I approach this stage with intention.
Teen sessions aren’t about stiff poses or forced smiles. They’re about presence. Personality. Identity.
I guide them gently. I play their music. I create space for them to feel comfortable and seen. And slowly, their real selves show up in front of the camera.
Because one day, sooner than you think, this version of them will change, and you’ll wish you had paused to preserve it.
Not because everything was perfect, but because it was real.
Celebrate Love All Year Long
Valentine’s Day is a reminder, but love isn’t seasonal.
It’s in the eye rolls, the inside jokes, the quiet car rides. The pride you feel watching them grow into who they’re becoming.
I hope this year, not just today, you feel deeply loved by the people who matter most to you.
And if you're in this season with your teens, this is your reminder not to skip it.
The years move quickly but the memories can last a lifetime.
